More battles on behalf of our son.

So how is it going?  Slowly...

There seems to be a lot on in October, what with Statement Reviews, Transition Plans, DLA Interrogations, all to do with our younger son who has ASD turning 16.  Apparently when you turn 16 you should be able to fill in your own DLA application renewal form....Um...what is it about Autism that you bureaucrats don't understand?   Why is it that everyone makes things so difficult?  Goodness, most adults struggle with filling in these forms let along teenagers, especially those with an ASD.   Perhaps a few of you should try living with and helping a child with Autism?  Whilst there is much joy, it is also very, very hard work, and something that we don't necessarily see an end in sight as much as we would like to think he will eventually be able to live independently, there is no way he is going to be able to cope without significant help.  Of course by the sheer nature of his Autism and one of the ways in manifests itself, he doesn't see himself as 'disabled'  and why should he to a certain extent, and yet there does come a point where some acknowledgement and awareness of the difficulties ahead has to become a reality.  Can he travel independently in unfamiliar areas?  NO.  Could he cook 'properly prepared' meals? NO  Does he needed to be reminded frequently of various needs that need to be met?  Yes.  Well the list could go on.  So yet more pressure is being heaped upon our shoulders as we try and justify why we feel our son's Disability Living Allowance should continue, after all, just because he is turning 16, doesn't mean the Autism is magically going to disappear!  I'm sure we would all  wish that!  Whilst he is going to have to try to come to terms with things we have written about his needs, which he is going to take offence to and disagree with as he doesn't see things from anyone else's point of view.  Why is everything a battle to get his needs met?

So now I also have to get the place sorted, tided and spotless for this INTERROGATION by the beginning of the second week in October.  Nothing like a bit of pressure eh?

So not only that but I also have my hospital visit to see the Neurologist to see if he can do further tests to see if the Chiari Malformation has progressed/changed in any way and also to see if he has any more suggestions of ways to get rid of the chronic pain.

Progress report - part two

On Friday a lovely friend of mine visited for afternoon tea of tea and scones (of course!)  We had a lovely time nattering and catching up on things.  She gave me this lovely crochet phone case she had made.

Isn't it great?!

We went to see DS1 down at the Maritime Academy on Saturday and went out with him and I even got to look in ONE charity shop, where lovely hubby bought me a book bag, brand new for £2.00

I actually have designs on using it for my little wooden Hitty dolls, when travelling with them...but not certain yet.

Lastly I couldn't, no just couldn't despite my good intentions leave this little steiff guinea pig behind in the Charity Shop today when I saw him sitting in the 25p bin!

However, I can report that I have so far listed over 35 items on Evilbay and have sold several things already and have a trolley load of stuff to take down to the Charity Shops on a fine day.  I have managed, sort of, to keep the kitchen areas and bathroom that I cleaned and tidied last week, in the same condition, although still haven't got to work through the papers as we had a bit of an incident which resulted in our younger son and I having to spend most of the day in A & E yesterday.  Fortunately he is okay, a broken finger and a fair bit of bruising, but it could have been far worse.  (He was set upon by a group of louts!)  Being Autistic, he was in a very stressed and agitated state as you could well imagine, hence why not a lot of progress has been made since late Saturday night.

Of course the lounge/living room is covered with 'stuff' that I have been sorting through and looks much worse than it was, but hey, progress is surely being made?

It has been horrible, grey, damp, dark, wet and miserable today and cold!  I hope this isn't a sign of what is to come, I really don't like the cold, dark days of winter.

Progress report

Writing that post yesterday did me the world of good and I am amazed by the response it brought about and the lovely honest emails and comments I have received.  Sharon, I am so glad you commented as I had 'lost' you in cyberspace when you changed your blog. I can't reply to you personally as you are a 'no-reply' blogger, but do feel free to email me if you wish to that would be lovely.  I have now book marked your blog though.

It feels good to have acknowledged things publicly so to speak, but of course now I have to actually start 'doing' whilst reminding myself that Rome wasn't built in a day and my problems and house won't be sorted that quickly either.  I will eat my elephant in small pieces....  As an often impatient person, and as a teacher once told me, a perfectionist, this is where the difficulties occur and I think why I have often given up in despair.

I spent most of yesterday sorting through a couple of doll boxes, taking photos and listing things on ebay and whilst I think I've made more mess in the process, I have sorted out about 16 assorted dolls to sell and whilst they probably won't sell for much they WILL reduce the debt  AND declutter to some extent.  I still have a very long way to go and at first it felt like I had achieved nothing. It is amazing how long it takes to photograph each item and edit the photos.  I had to remind myself that I still managed to cook my husband a lunch, do the dishes, fold a basket of washing and even allowed myself a few minutes to go and enjoy my roses.

Today I hope to continue my progress, but also do some work in the bathroom as I really can't stand the mess in there any longer.  I mean how many toothbrushes does a household of three REALLY need??  Of course it is then learning to keep it that way...little and often.    It looks like a lovely day so some washing will be done as well, although on a whole I manage to keep up with the washing...it is just the ironing that likes to get the better of me at times, but that is due to a pain factor more than anything else.

Well onwards and upwards they say.  I have to continually remind myself to keep going and not give up...

Thank you again dear friends for your ongoing support.

Thoughts, Debts, Obsessions and What to do about it?

I am posting this both here and on my Sewing for Sasha blog as it is that that has helped contribute to the way I feel, although not solely of course.  Yet again I woke at about 3.30 am this morning...this time I decided to record my thoughts.

As I lay here in the early hours of the morning, around 4am is the usual time, I worry myself silly over the debt I have gotten myself into over my continual wanting of ‘more’.  I am ashamed at who I’ve become, at the way I have allowed myself to be seduced and lured by envy?  At how I’ve made decisions and promises that deep down I probably knew I couldn’t keep, and yet hoped for a way, which have merely led me further into debt and ended up letting myself and others down.  For goodness sake I used to work in banking and advise people on their finances…How could I have let this happen to myself?  I am guilty of the envy and competition that seems to have grabbed hold of me through the use of the internet.  Obsession could be a good word for it.  Certainly the internet is contributing to my temptation by bringing things within easier reach – just the press of a button, no exchanging of actual cash.    Therein lies the problem… There is almost a jealousy and need to compete in those of us weak enough to succumb to these vices.  Certainly I am guilty of this.

Instead of being satisfied with what I have and enjoying and making the most of them, I have been sucked into the addiction of wanting more and ‘keeping up’.  This is ertainly no one else’s fault but my own.  I have completely ignored the fact that I have no income with which to do such a thing.

I could ‘blame’ all sorts of things, from the pain and inability to play my music, to medication but the simple fact remains it is I who has gotten me into this mess, so it is I who needs to get myself out.  Perhaps some of the pain I suffer from is partly psychological, in that the feelings of worry and guilt acerbate the symptoms.  Is it the pain which wakes me at night which in turn causes me to worry, or is it the worry which causes me to wake in pain?  Of course I also worry about the pain and symptoms as well as although I do my best to ignore, the simple fact is they are not getting any better and some are spreading.  Is the Chiari getting worse?  Is more nerve damage being caused?

I don’t always recognise who I am anymore.  I have no motivation or drive, no enthusiasm; I just ‘float’ along getting by.  I set myself goals and targets, yet fail to achieve them, often not even starting on the simplest of them, certainly not finishing them.  I look around me and all I see is mess.  I want to clear it, sort it etc… but it appears I don’t want to bad enough as I never do.  I never change myself or the mess and yet deep down I know I really do want to live in a clean, ordered and tidy house.  I want to be able to live in a house I would be proud to open the door to let visitors in, not one where I cringe with embarrassment and want to hide.  And yet how does one get out of this rut and actually achieve?  How do you discover the motivation, energy and drive needed to do something and then KEEP it that way?  I often ponder these things, especially in the early hours of the morning or when I’m feeling low and overwhelmed by it all.  I struggle with daily tasks, wasting inordinate amounts of time on the internet searching.  Searching for what I ask myself.  What am I REALLY searching for while I am scouring ebay, blogs etc…  When I think about this in the early hours of the morning I just don’t know.

They say ‘less is more’  I’m not sure how true this is being someone who finds it very difficult to have less and is always wanting more, and yet deep down I know it is probably true.  For example, I know if I was told I could only keep one or two of my Sasha dolls, I know which ones they would be, no matter how hard it was.  Instead I am always wanting to add to my collection, and yet why?  Can I really enjoy each and every one of them properly I ask myself when I am feeling this way?

The solution always seems so much clearer at this time of the morning when I am lying in bed after tossing, turning and fretting away.  Come day time, it all turns into a blur again and the day becomes a repeat of the previous one where nothing is done or achieved and often I’ve spent money I don’t have.  At this time of day I am able to look at things more rationally and believe I can cut down, sort, decide who and what to keep and who and what to sell or give away in order to restore both my bank account and peace of mind.  Yet come day time when I look at my dolls, or other things, it seems so much more difficult and I keep making excuses, falling ‘in love’ all over again and not wanting to part with anything.  However, if I am completely honest with myself I know I don’t NEED so much.  I know who/what I would keep, favour if I really HAD to choose so why don’t I do so, as really I DO HAVE to choose.  Wouldn’t I then enjoy them more without the guilt niggling away at me?

I worry that I will ‘lose’ money and that I won’t get what I spent on them.  But does this really matter in the long run if I achieve my goal of being debt free and the subsequent peace of mind that will offer me, the tranquillity and proper enjoyment that I am seeking?  How can I enjoy something that I don’t have ‘time’ for, that just sits on a shelf, in my studio amongst the rest of my ‘stuff/clutter’ I have accumulated over time.  I am a hands on person preferring to enjoy, hold and ‘play/use’ rather than store and just look at my collections.

Can I do it I wonder?  Can I really say enough is enough and actually do something about it?  Something positive and constructive?  I am good at writing plans and lists, but really no good at following them through.  I have good intentions, but come morning they all blow out the door.  What I actually need to do is DO IT!  This doll addiction has spread to other areas of my life as well.  Too much of everything to the extent that I can’t keep anything tidy, or find places to put things away.  It really is time to start doing something about this before I am completely swallowed up.  But WILL I?  By doing this I should then be able to achieve those things that are important.  Things that I’d really like to do and places I’d like to see.

To start this is really simple IF the first step can be made.  I need to view things with a new eye, a new perspective.  There are so many hints, sayings and guides out there, many of which really do make sense, but do I take any notice?  Sure I’ve read the books….Instead of smiling when I walk from room to room, my heart sinks at the mess and enormity of all I’ve got to do and sort through.
It is not just dolls I have obsessed over. I have been like this over many of my interests and hobbies over the years, whether it be music, instruments, books, cavies, but most especially dolls.  Whatever is the main driving force/hobby at the time almost becomes my sole focus at the exclusion of everything else.  I need to be good at something, I need to keep busy, have focus and something to work/strive towards, a goal.  With the music I had this… I had grades to achieve, qualifications to gain and music to learn and perform.  It was a positive type of driving force that kept me ‘alive’ and motivated.  Although I don’t miss the stress that sometimes caused, it was in many ways a more positive type of stress than that which I have now which perhaps is a more insidious type of stress  that is less obvious.

It is time to really try and do something about this – perhaps that will help ease the pain I suffer from, perhaps not, but what it will do I am sure is ease the worry and stop the guilt that often consumes me, but then tempts me to go and do more of the same…buy more and more!  I’ve got to realise changes won’t happen overnight, however much I want them to.  Nor in a day, or a week, but rather over a period of time.  These problems have come about over a long period of time and so therefore it is going to take some time to change, change the way I think, do, behave and achieve.  This is surely the first step.  Taking note of achievements not failures.  Remembering it is those first few steps that pave the way forward.

It is time to say NO to myself.  Stop looking at things for sale, really THINK before buying, walk away, don’t make immediate decisions…don’t be tempted by the need to be the same, remember what I do have that is special and enjoy.

The very first thing I need to do is to say no to something that is going to put me further in debt.  Something that I hate to do, as I feel like I am letting people down, breaking promises I had really genuinely meant to keep, but by keeping will only contribute to me sinking deeper and drowning.  No matter how much I don’t want to do this, I need to face the reality that really I have no choice and should have made this decision so much earlier, but kept hoping that a way could be found to clear the way.  I really believed I could do this, until I actually looked at just what the figures say and mean.  For this I am really sorry, but hope that I will eventually emerge as a better person.

So that is the start, saying no and apologising.
Next is to actually DO.

I will try and keep a record, but need to impose a limit on myself to remove myself from temptation, as without doing such a thing I will be tempted and may very well succumb.  I will need help with this, I’m not sure I can do it alone.

Rose & Hexagon Flowers

My gorgeous roses are still blooming beautifully, with lots of new rose buds to blossom.

Today I received in the post my hexagon flowers for September.

My oh my, did Rosalie from Australia spoil me, sending not two, but THREE absolutely gorgeous flowers...WOW!  Thank you so very much for these wonderful flowers Rosalie and also for the lovely bookmark.  Last time I heard kookaburras was 21 years ago just after I had given birth to my older son!

Books, books and more books!

One of the things both my husband and I enjoy is browsing second hand book shops.  He looks for chess books, I have a much broader range of interests.  I look for books by the authors I collect (as seen on my Book Collection & Books Read page, as well as books my Dad might be interested in.  Well I hit gold at Wadebridge where we found a wonderful book shop which was unfortunately closing down due to the shop being sold on and the usual rent hikes that seem to accompany such a thing.  The owner was lovely and friendly and knowledgeable and he kept his shop well stocked and ordered.  Unlike a couple of others we went in, in another town that were also closing down which were quite frankly a mess!

I found several books for both myself and to take over to NZ to give to Dad when I go.  (Actually one of the books on the left of the photo below I found in an antique shop).  I would have liked to have had a final look in the shop, but unfortunately we ran out of time and days.

Two books to add to my Bessie Marchant collection.  Also on my 'to read' pile which is growing ever larger!

A GA Henty - I usually collect the decorative Blackie editions, but I haven't got this, so bought it until such time that I get a Blackie edition.

I couldn't resist this, having read it years ago.

This book looks really interesting with such amazing illustrations and eight stories:

The Pea-Green Nose
War in Dolldom
The River-King
Story of a Horse
Sybil's Vision
The Boy with a Tail
The Search after Happiness
The Man who made the best of Everything

It was awarded to a B Whitlock for Regular Attendance during the year 1923 at Owen Street Bristol City Mission Sunday School.

Wonderful illustrations through the book.

I think this will be a fun book to read.

Next up is another very interesting book by the looks of things and I couldn't resist.

Edward Wilson: Nature-Lover by George Seaver published in 1937

It is full of the most amazing artwork, both colour and black and white.

Both my Dad and I should really enjoy reading this.

A collection of books with thoughts of giving to Dad.  Two books by an author he reads, WH Hudson, although I think both of us have Green Mansions already, so I will probably sell that one.  All of them look interesting and should be enjoyable reads.  Again they all have lovely illustrations and photographs.

A Year with Nature by J.E. Roberts
Green Mansions by W.H. Hudson
Birds of Wing by W.H. Hudson
Nature and the Rambler by W.R. Calvert

To top those off today I managed to spot a GA Henty in a Charity Shop, something that rarely happens!  Plus it was  a Blackie edition and again one I don't have so I am happy.

Of course I also took my Kindle away with me, and whilst it in no way could ever compare to any of the wonderful books above as there is something very special about handling books, smelling them, feeling, holding and reading them, it has opened up many books that I may never have read or discovered due to the great specials and freebies that Amazon offers.

A wonderful series that I have recently finished while on holiday was about a family based in a rural area of New Zealand in the later 1800s leading to the end of the first world war.  I wasn't sure when I downloaded the first (free) book whether I would enjoy it, the title making me think 'soppy, happy ever after' type stories, but believe me, it was nothing like that at all and I ended up buying the rest in the series.  I loved the fact that so much New Zealand history was incorporated into the story and the insight it gave into the way people lived in those times.  The areas were familiar to me so I could really use my imagination to try and picture the scenes and locality.  I highly recommend this author, Shayne Parkinson.

The books are:

Sentence of Marriage
Mud and Gold
A Second Chance
Settling the Account
Daisy's War
All I Want.

Cornwall - Part Three - Tintagel

The 6th September was the perfect day to go to Tintagel Castle.  We thought DS2 would have wanted to come with us being something of a History and Myth lover, but sadly he refused to come out once again.  Never mind his loss!  We certainly enjoyed ourselves, although goodness what a climb!

The climb was definitely worth it though for the magnificent views.

Again I will let most of the photos explain themselves as it has taken me all morning just to edit the photos and I really must get on with some housework!

The various colours of the water was amazing.

So much to see and such amazing history, it was lovely to just sit and imagine times past.

Fabulous colours in the rocks.

The little village of Tintagel was a very interesting place as well and we really enjoyed our walk around it.

Interesting buildings...this one was a guest house and looked really lovely.

The Old Post Office is a National Trust Property and we enjoyed going around this amazing old building.

It had beautiful gardens in the back, so very peaceful.

We were treated to a view of a hawk on the way down the road to our cottage, feasting on a road kill.

I was lucky enough to catch it in flight as it took off when we drove down.

More photos of Henry's Adventures at Tintagel Castle here.
